Many years ago, we made a donation to the American Cancer Society as a present to a dear friend of ours — someone who had fought cancer and won, thanks to research and medical innovations. It made us feel good to make such a donation, and our friend really appreciated the gift, even though she didn’t technically “get” anything.
If that sounds like the kind of gift you’d like to give to someone this holiday season, the Alternative Gift Fair is the place to be. Here’s how they describe it on the web site:
Do you want gifts that reflect the true spirit of the holiday season? At the Alternative Gift Fair, you can donate to participating local, national, and international non-profit organizations. You may choose hand-lettered holiday cards featuring local artists describing the gifts you have made in the names of your friends and family.
Some of the local charities you can donate to include Second Harvest Tri-Cities, Domestic Violence Services of Benton and Franklin Counties, and the Mid-Columbia Reading Foundation. Here’s the full list of available charities/groups.
The Alternative Gift Fair will take place next Saturday, December 6th, from 12-4 p.m. at Community Unitarian Universalist Church, 2819 West Sylvester St., Pasco.
