Everybody loves a bargain, but bargains are sometimes hard to find when we’re talking about airfare and the Pasco (PSC) airport. The airfare situation is actually better today than it was several years ago (because we have more choice and competition), but it’s still usually more expensive to fly out of Pasco than larger airports like Spokane or Seattle.

So, if you’re like me, you’re always interested in finding cheap airfare from Pasco to … anywhere. I think I have a suggestion that will help:

Airfare Watchdog

Airfare Watchdog is a cool site that tracks price changes on airlines and airports all across the country. They have a page of Pasco-specific airfare discounts that gets updated every day. Some of the specials are advertised and some aren’t.

But the coolest thing of all is that you don’t even need to visit the web site. Right at the top (and in several other places on the page) there’s a link that invites you to subscribe to PSC airfare deals by email. I highly recommend those emails! Here’s the one that came in today:

Some days the email has fewer discounts than that, but that’s the nature of things. It’s a once-a-day email and it always has at least a couple cheap airfares from Pasco airport.

There’s a lot of other good stuff on the Airfare watchdog site, too, so be sure to poke around.

August 17-18-19, 2010: Surprise final film

Doors open at 9:00 am, and the movies will begin at 10:00 am. You can’t bring outside food or drink in to the theater, and strollers/carseats are also not allowed. In past years, the theater has offered a special $4 “Kid’s Tray” food option, but I don’t know if that’s the case this summer.

If you’re new to the area, the theater is located at 5020 Convention Drive, right across from TRAC.

Cari and our son started a tradition several years ago: At the end of the school year, the two of them go out to breakfast to celebrate another year “in the books,” as it were. So, when our daughter reached school age, we decided to continue that tradition — just the two of us.

Her favorite breakfast spot is IHOP, so we just went this weekend to celebrate the end of another school year and the start of summer break. We don’t go out for breakfast very often, so this is becoming a favorite tradition for both of us.

Cari and our son go to a different restaurant in another part of the Tri-Cities, but we always enjoy driving down Road 68 and pulling into the IHOP parking lot.

Do you have any family traditions that take place in Pasco?

I finally got my chance last week to be one of those uber-geeks who shows up for the midnight movie premiere on the day a new movie is released. For me, it was Iron Man 2 at Pasco’s Fairchild Cinemas. I’ll get to the movie in just a second, but I have to talk about the movie theatre and the event itself first.

This photo at right is what it looked like in theater #1 at 10:45 pm. Yes, a full one-hour-and-15-minutes before the movie was due to start, and theater one was already filling up. When I arrived, I expected to find a long line of people snaking through the lobby, waiting to be let in. But nothing. “Am I really the first one here?,” I asked the cashier guy. “Oh no, there are a couple hundred people already in the theaters.”

Theaters? Did he say plural “theaters”? Yep. He explained that they had already opened up three screens for Iron Man 2, and that probably every theater would be showing the movie if they sold enough tickets. He said they’d already sold 623 tickets and expected a lot more walk-up traffic before midnight.

I could choose whichever theater I wanted, and so after being told that screens 1 and 12 were the biggest, I chose #1. By the time midnight rolled around, it was pretty crowded, but it never filled up completely. That’s because, sure enough, Fairchild did ultimately open up every screen to show Iron Man 2. I went to use the men’s room during the previews and looked down the hallway; every marquee said “Iron Man 2.” Crazy. And very cool.

So, two thumbs up to Fairchild Cinemas for how they handled a huge crowd and huge movie event.

Iron Man 2 Review

What about the movie, you ask? Well, it was good. It wasn’t great. It was funny at times and it was exciting at times … but it was also a bit slow at times, and disjointed at others.

Iron Man 2 didn’t have as cohesive a storyline. The plot tried to accomplish too much. There were too many storylines going on at once — Tony Stark’s health, Tony’s troubled relationship with his dad, Tony’s interest in Pepper Potts, Tony’s interest in Scarlett Johansson’s character, Tony’s battle against the government, and Tony’s battle against the Bad Guy. I don’t think any of those storylines was developed enough to keep my interest, and with so much going on, it seemed like the spectacular action scenes were few and far between.

It’s impossible to not compare Iron Man 2 to the original, and I felt the first one was better. It had a much simpler storyline, a clearer sense of what was at stake and why it mattered, plus more and better action scenes. The original was a big surprise for me; I totally didn’t expect to love it as much as I did. With Iron Man 2, though, I went in to the theater with enormous expectations. Maybe that was the biggest problem — Iron Man 2 may not have had a chance to live up to the hype.

Perhaps the most notable change is that Horizon is reducing flights between Yakima and Seattle from four to three per day. This could mean more passengers choosing to fly from Pasco to Seattle if the times are more convenient — especially folks living in the Yakima Valley. Horizon operates six flights between PSC and SEA at the moment.

Some of the other changes are two new flights between Seattle and Reno, and several additional flights from Seattle into Montana. In both cases, that means more choice for Pasco air travelers — and that’s always good news.

The changes listed above all go into effect on June 6th.

(Now if only we could get Horizon to resume flights between Pasco and Portland….)

We all know Pasco is growing by leaps and bounds — the number of new houses being built tells us that, the amount of traffic on the streets tells us that, the need for a new high school tells us that, etc., etc. And the State Office of Financial Management also tells us that with this interesting chart:

This is a chart based on the latest official population estimates for municipalities across the state. What it shows is that, back in 2000, Pasco’s population made it the 26th biggest city in Washington. But now, with all the dramatic growth, Pasco has jumped to being the 16th biggest city in the state. And no one’s grown more than Pasco. (The city at #7, with dashes for the first couple years, is Spokane Valley, which I don’t believe was considered a separate municipality until 2003.)

If you’re curious about the actual population estimates and growth, the city’s population in 2000 was 32,066 and it’s estimated in 2009 to be 54,490. That’s 70% growth in just 9 years. Amazing.

I bought a pair of jeans — regularly $48, then $24 with the 50% off. And then another 20% off brought the price down to $19.20.

In fact, I ended up getting $104 worth of stuff for $40. Awesome. Get over to the Broadmoor Outlet Mall pronto!

The stockings were hung by the front door with care, (since we don’t have a chimney)
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there.
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of video games and stuffed animals danced in their heads.

And that’s where we’ll leave it off, because it’s Christmas Eve and I can only be so creative in rewriting a holiday classic for more modern times.

In any case, Merry Christmas to all our Pasco Real Estate Blog readers, and best wishes for a terrific 2009!
