How Long Can the Broadmoor Outlet Mall Survive?

The Broadmoor Outlet Mall in Pasco is probably my favorite place in the Tri-Cities to shop. No kidding. I buy my shoes and my kids’ shoes at the Famous Brand Shoes outlet store. C’mon, how can you beat a pair of men’s sneakers for $19.99? I buy a lot of my wardrobe — casual and work clothes — at the Van Heusen outlet store. Dress shirts are no more than $20, khaki pants run about $15, and khaki shorts are usually about $12-$13. I’m even in the frequent shopper clubs at both stores. :)

There used to be a bookstore at the Broadmoor Outlet Mall. We took the kids every couple months and spent $20-$30, coming home with sometimes 7-8 new books. But the bookstore closed a year or two ago. And that’s the problem….

I’m afraid the outlet mall may not survive much longer. How can it? The mall seems to never be more than half-occupied with stores. I was there last week, and my unofficial count was that about 8 out of 20 spaces were being used. (It’s hard to make a count like that because some stores take up multiple spaces.) Here’s one side of the mall:

And here’s the other:

As you can see, lots of empty white facades where stores should be. No matter what day I shop there, the parking lot is never full:

I just don’t get it, either, because Pasco as a whole is growing like gangbusters. Cari wrote earlier this year about how Pasco is the fastest growing area in Washington. A lot of that growth is happening in the Road 68 – Road 100 area … right next to Broadmoor Outlet Mall!

So, why aren’t all these folks shopping at the outlet mall? Why aren’t new stores flocking to open up where all these new people are building houses? I don’t have any answers, but I sure hope the mall stays open … because I don’t know where else I’m going to buy my sneaks, shorts, pants, and shirts if it ever closes.
