Pasco to Lose Star Track Event

There’s no questioning the impact of sports on the Pasco economy. The Columbia Cup hydroplane races bring thousands of people into town every summer, and those folks stay in Pasco hotels, eat at Pasco restaurants, and spend money at other Pasco businesses. That’s good news for everybody.

But there was some bad news this week: The WIAA voted to pull the State High School Track and Field Championship -=- also known as Star Track — event out of Pasco. The event has been held at Pasco’s Edgar Brown Stadium for the past six years, and it’s meant Big Business for the Pasco economy. But next year it’s headed back to Tacoma, and taking all that economic benefit with it.

It’s also bad news for prep sports fans. With the loss of Star Track and other WIAA changes, just about every major high school championship — the Gridiron Classic, Mat Classic, Star Track and the 4A and 3A state basketball tourneys — will be taking place in Tacoma.
