Road 68 Traffic Changes On the Way?

You’ve probably noticed a lot of police cars and such hanging out this year along Road 68. The Herald has an article today about the increased crackdown on drivers as an attempt to prevent violations and minor accidents.

But there’s also some speculation about changes that may be coming soon to the roadway itself to further efforts to make the area safer:

City traffic engineers are working on possibly extending some of the curbs separating the northbound and southbound lanes in front of Lowe’s to prevent northbound drivers from making a U-turn to cut into the Lowe’s parking lot, Flanagan said.

They’re also considering raising that curb so drivers can’t drive over it instead of waiting in line to make the proper left turn into the shopping area, he said.

A curb extension that prevented southbound drivers from turning left into the SunMart has helped eliminate collisions caused by drivers who turn in front of traffic because one lane stopped but the second lane didn’t.

In the meantime, the article says you can expect the police emphasis to continue throughout the year.
