The Herald ran a story this week about the WA State Parks Commission possibly shutting down Sacajawea State Park in Pasco to help meet mandatory budget cuts caused by the state’s poor fiscal management in recent years.
The Parks Commission web site only lists 13 parks in Washington that are being considered for transfer, and Sacajawea isn’t one of them. But this week’s article says our local Pasco park is on a larger “watch list” of 33 that may be closed temporarily. Of those 33, Sacajawea reportedly ranks 4th lowest in terms of visitation of revenue generated.
What would a temporary closure mean? Here’s an explanation:
Temporary closure of the park would mean its interpretive center would be closed, the restrooms would be locked, utilities would be turned off and the gate would be locked. Only minimal staffing would be used to periodically check on the park.
People still could get into the park on foot, but they would do so at their own risk.
You can learn more about the state park budget issues at the Parks Commission web site, and you can send formal comments to pao@parks.wa.gov. The commission meets again in late April and will be finalizing things at that point.
